Jane Gibson
I have a studio and small gallery at home. Nearly all my work begins with a thrown cylinder which is then distorted, changed and added to. The act of throwing is addictive but also contemplative. The flattened cylinder with base and foot added becomes a surface for painting. Then the fun starts... Freely painted layers of coloured slips are applied with some idea of the finished concept and then the pieces are biscuit fired. Bright or somber glazes improve on the underlying slip design and sometimes dots or lines of overglaze appropriate to the idea are also added to form abstract patterns with references to my travels and my enjoyment of landscapes, seascapes and gardens. These pots are stoneware or porcelain and glaze fired to 1260 degrees in an electric kiln. Some are then enhanced with touches of gold lustre. Did I mention it is all very addictive?
