I am a retired teacher with a background also in construction and woodcraft. It was my interest in craft and drawing that led me into pottery. The complexity and variety of ceramic construction was a revelation to me. The potential of clay as an art medium seems endless but I have discovered that one does need to become aware of its properties and constraints.
I love experimenting with both materials and techniques. I am inspired by objects and life around me and I get great pleasure from being able to combine shapes to create three dimensional sculptures that capture attention, are a joy to make and inspire thought. My Welsh heritage also influences my work. I work with stoneware and all my projects are hand-built with a bias towards abstract.
Possibly because of my technical background, geometric shapes feature a lot in my work, circles particularly, being the ultimate curvilinear shape that seems to embody the attributes that attract us. Research on human perception suggest that we have a propensity for circular and curvy shapes as they seem to evoke calmness, peacefulness, and relaxation. This is probably why I enjoy basing so much of my work on them.
