Steve Hoselitz
My work speaks for itself, but some of the influences have been the colourful art movements of the late 19th and early 20th century. Shape and decoration are important elements of my current work. Most of the pieces have been fired three times, and are carefully condsidered, so I make only a few pieces a month.
A little history I have been making pottery for more than 60 years. I learnt the basics at secondary school. Later I continued my interest in ceramics at evening classes while I worked as a journalist in London, the north of England and later South Wales. In 2006 I decided to build my own studio and started to become more than an occasional evening-class potter. So I scaled back my work as a journalist and Wainfield Pottery was born. At that stage I made and sold stoneware plates, mugs, bowls jugs: functional pieces using classic glaze recipes fired in a gas kiln.
Later I was invited to try porcelain as a medium, rather than stoneware. That started me in an entirely different direction, and from that beginning my current decorative style has developed. I was really lucky to have an inspirational pottery teacher at school, Peter Elbra. Later I was encouraged by college lecturers like Ken Gunn in Blackpool and was really lucky to draw on the knowledge and support of late dear potter friends Steve Mills and Sue Bentley. Most recently I have been back in my own studio working in stoneware again making domesticware.
