South Wales Potters

Robyn Cove

I make thrown functional stoneware pottery. I hope to make work that captures a rustic homely warmth. Pots that sit easily in the hand, are comfortable to use with functional shapes that are also stylish and collectable.

Direct sources of inspiration are hard to pin down as there are so many. Possibly most apparent is pottery from Japan and the East. If I look to my bookshelves there is much on this and British pottery including Leach and Cardew.

My pots are currently fired in an electric kiln. I challenge myself to push the aesthetic possibilities of ceramic materials to enhance the pot's surfaces within an oxidised firing environment. I build up surfaces by layering materials of colour and texture, to subtly accentuate corners and edges to promote the shapes present in the work from carving and faceting.
