I started making pots at Hookshouse in 1975, and see myself as essentially a maker of functional wares broadly in the Leach tradition. I make two designs of domestic ware, one finished with a classic ash glaze and one with a brushed and trailed design. My work is raw glazed and once fired to 1280/1300, most of it in a 20cu ft wood kiln, but my old 60 cu ft oil kiln is still fired occasionally.
I also really enjoy playing with pattern, and one-off pieces with strong and simple geometrical patterns in ‘black and white’ have been a feature here for many years now.
More recently I have started to apply multiple trailed and overlapping glazes to the wax resist geometrical designs, and particularly enjoy the way the half obscured pattern creates a dialogue between precision and randomness.
The range is completed by frost proof garden pots, some in plain stoneware and some ‘black and white’.
