I make stoneware pots that are used in the kitchen and at the table, which are pretty and useful. I feel that good home made food needs good home made pots to serve or cook in.
Gratin dishes, oil pots, casseroles, jugs and mugs are so pleasing to make. As my work is functional, I occasionally like to escape from function into something a little more playful, hence the swooping handles on the oil pots.
I live in an area of Roman occupation and their pottery and glassware in the Legionary Museum at Caerleon has influenced some of my work. I like to think of the enduring links with those potters who provided food containers for Roman families. Perhaps some gardeners of the future will turn up bits of my pots.
I learned to make pots in evening classes and when I retired, I was able at last, to start really developing my ideas.
