South Wales Potters

Mair Rossiter

I was first drawn to smoke firing by the tactile quality of the burnished surface. It is the sort of work that demands to be picked up and held.

Then, as I began to understand the techniques, I started to appreciate the contrast between the precise, labour intensive making process and the final, almost uncontrollable, stage of committing the cherished pot to the fire.  It is the excitement of searching through the ashes to see if you have a masterpiece or a burnt offering!

Starting with a thrown vessel I then refine the shape by hand, before burnishing with a pebble to create a highly polished surface.  After the initial bisque firing I use various resist mediums to produce a surface pattern during the final firing

Such a time-consuming making process contrasts dramatically with normal modern life, with its emphasis on increasing automation. On a personal basis this contrast is very therapeutic and I hope that an appreciation of the time and effort spent adds another dimension to my work.
