I studied illustration at college, but worked as a graphic designer, then an art teacher. A secondment to learn ceramic skills got me hooked on clay, never to return to teaching full-time.

At first I experimented in many directions, with forms and glazes - and themes. The human figure kept making an appearance over the years. I still work with schools and a new direction has been to make public art.

Since 2004 I’ve made six community murals and had an artist residency making a life-size figurative triptych. It’s only in the last couple of years that I feel that I’m beginning to do things that are valuable to me personally, things to do with the escalating global problems that we face now: pollution, over-population, and climate change.

I do still want to reflect the beauty of life and its humour, but we are in danger of losing this beauty, so now I’m trying to make my figures express some of these new concerns.
