In the 1960's at art school I discovered that for me working in clay was the most satisfying way to artistic expression.
Since then creating figures and faces out of clay has been my most enduring interest. Although I do portraiture and life sculpture, my creativity comes into its own in imaginative heads and figures. Dreams, visions, and mythologies all influence the way I see. Hooded figures may be sinister or benign depending on how the viewer interprets them.
Thoughts and images twist and turn in our minds, whether they are dreams or worries, memories or reveries. My sculptured faces twist and turn, they are thoughtful, introspective, and maybe just a bit wistful.
These sculptures are quite small, ranging from about 20 to 49 centimetres in height. I use mainly raku clay or toasted stoneware, which I find are very sympathetic clays for sculptural work. I usually apply a combination of metal oxides before the final firing, and have occasionally used a transparent matt glaze, although this is the exception rather than the rule.
