South Wales Potters

Kirsty Stirrup

I took Access to Art and Design at West Wales School of the Arts in 2007 and was awarded student of the year.

I am currently in my second year at the West Wales School of the Arts undertaking a Ceramics degree.

In this body of work I have created ornate ceramic shrines made from stoneware clay. The shrines are hand built and incorporate figurative work, carving, and glass slumping and ethnically inspired decoration.

My motivation is to draw attention to the loss of skills and the decline in traditional crafts in today’s global economy.

I have found inspiration from Indian and Islamic culture and architecture and western crafts, creating a multi-cultural fusion within the shrines.

I have used a variety of techniques to glaze and decorate the pieces including under glazes, and stoneware bone ash glaze, on glaze trailing, decals and slumping of glass Russian beadwork onto ceramics.

My work is innovative, makes a statement and communicates with the viewer.

I have chosen the names for this body of work from the many names for traditional henna decoration across the world.

I am a self motivated individual with a passion for knowledge and a desire to create.
