South Wales Potters

Jan Merry

My work is inspired by a long-term interest in women’s spirituality, combined with a love of nature.

My sculptures reflect and explore organic female forms in nature.

They are hand-built using the ancient method of coiling, and completed over several days allowing for drying and shaping which cannot be hurried.

Each piece is then burnished 2 or 3 times, low fired and then gently smoke-fired on the inside. A tactile finish is enhanced by waxing.

Although this is time consuming. I love the sculptural aspect of the tactile process.

My aim is to create a piece which is interesting from all angles, an organic shape which retains something of the “primitive” and yet is skilfully made. This is my constant challenge.

My shapes have evolved over the years, and whilst similar, each piece is unique.

The pieces shown here are about 6” to 12” tall, and
6” to 9” wide. They are not designed to hold water
