Sat May 8th 2010 at Landsdown Pottery, Stroud

SWP members John & Penny West have offered to host an event at their Stroud workshop, housed in historic former college buildings.

STEVE MILLS has agreed to share his considerable throwing skills with fellow members, demonstrating ‘capping’, useful for throwing larger pots easily.

JOHN WEST will show us how he achieves his altered thrown vessels

For hand builders we are fortunate to have JITKA PALMER showing us how she creates her imaginatively decorated figurative work. Her work can be seen on:  www.studiopottery.co.uk

Steve and John’s excellent work can be viewed in the Members’ Gallery on this website.

All three demonstrators will provide hans on guidance in the workshop sessions.

Kiln Building/Firing Day (Sunday July 25th, 2010)

at Wainfield Farm, Wainfield Lane Gwehelog, Usk

Over the weekend of July 24/25 we are planning to build and wood-fire a brick kiln in a field adjacent to Steve Hoselitz’s home near Usk.                                                    The kiln will be semi-permanent – we hope to use it many times over the coming years.

It will have a pot chamber of about 7 cu ft and those who join in the fun can bring three – perhaps even four – pots each. We will have a system to ensure that everyone who takes part gets roughly an equal share of the kiln space.                     We will make this a light-salt firing, which can give light coloured pots some lovely flame painting on the outside. So light-coloured, buff stoneware clays will be better than darker ones. (Pots you bring need to have been bisque fired.)
