South Wales Potters

Olwen Thomas

I make contemporary porcelain ceramics inspired by my Welsh identity and iconic Welsh blankets. My ‘Hen Wlad Fy Mamau’ range references the colourful patterns of these beautiful textiles; they also celebrate the role of women in our history and the tradition of collecting ceramics to adorn dressers.

I create the vessels by hand which makes each piece unique.  The patterns are made with pigmented liquid clay on to a plaster slab, then porcelain is poured over it and the pattern becomes integrated into the clay. Once dried, the decorated porcelain clay is lifted off, and the shapes are then cut out and folded, like a blanket, to form the vessels.

I graduated with a BA Ceramics 1st Class Honours in 2014 from Coleg Sir Gâr. I live near Carmarthen and welcome visitors to my studio, by arrangement.

Rwy’n creu serameg porslen cyfoes sydd wedi ei ysbrydoli gan fy hunaniaeth Gymreig a charthenni eiconig Cymreig. Mae’r casgliad ‘Hen Wlad Fy Mamau’ yn atsain patrymau hyfryd y blancedi. Maent hefyd yn dyst i’r traddodiad o gasglu llestri i addurno’r aelwyd, ac yn ddathliad o gyfraniad merched i’n hanes.

Mae pob darn yn unigryw gan fy mod yn eu creu â llaw. Rwy’n peintio’r patrymau ar slab o blastr gyda chlai wedi ei liwio, yna arllwys clai porslen ar ei ben. Mae’r patrwm yn uno gyda’r porslen, ac wedi sychu, byddai’n ei godi a thorri siapiau a’u plygu, megis blanced, i ffurfio’r llestri.
