South Wales Potters

Jemma Elsley

My initial training followed a path of general art and design, after which I chose to specialise in 3D design, gaining a HND in Ceramics & Glass at Plymouth University in 1996 and a BA Hons in Ceramics at The University of Wales, Cardiff (UWIC) in 1998.

My passion for clay has continued since and after a relocation from Wiltshire to West Wales in 2018, I was able to establish Open Skies Studio in a beautiful part of the national park near Pembroke.

I am now developing a range of work inspired by my surroundings here in West Wales and my current work is inspired by both the landscape and the journey life takes you on.

I like to explore details such as the wildflowers on my doorstep, the unusual wind-swept trees I see every day, the rugged coastline and wild, powerful sea. My pieces have also evolved to incorporate elements of symbolism I have taken comfort in when life’s experiences have felt too hard to process. Shapes and symbols such as birds, clouds, gates, pathways and the sea and waves, have been inspired by my thoughts on life, love and loss.

Both my ceramic work and my illustrations are designed to enable the viewer to feel uplifted, comforted and hopeful. Offering either a focal point for their feelings, or simply used and given as a gesture of kindness for someone in need.

My Ceramic pieces are a combination of hand building and mould making methods, using a white earthenware clay. Each piece visits the kiln three times and is finished using underglaze colours and ceramic decals.

My illustrations are created using watercolour and fine liner pen, then reproduced onto ceramic decals which enhance my ceramic pieces.
